“No Friends On Powder Days” is a unique woodcarving project. After reading a couple of books about caricature carving, I wanted to try it myself. I don’t ski but I hear about skiing a lot so the winter theme was selected for the project. The impossible position, big smile on the happy face and bright painting, I think, bring positive emotions and make the caricature carving look really funny.

This is my second “in-the-round” carving. It is about 7 inches tall.

The shadow is right; the nose is really big like a potato. 🙂

The “no friends on a powder day” carving contains two separate pieces. The skier hangs on the skies.

I used basswood for the carving and mahogany for the base. I painted it using acrylic paints and coated the wood with several coats of boiled linseed oil.

This was a very fun project. I often found myself smiling while carving that “no friends on a powder day” caricature.
